11th June:
We took a team of 11 pupils from Years 3-6 to Haile Park in Cardiff today to take part in the Wales Rugby League and Introsport Primary Rugby League Cup. Before the competition started we had a training session from John from Wales Ruby League and had a chat with Lee, who came to teach us a few weeks back in school. We then played Hawthorn Primary in a warm-up game, coming away victorious by three tries to one, with tries coming from Charlie, Jordan and Jack. We moved into the final where we again played Hawthorn and were unfortunate to suffer deafeat with an exact reverse of the score, 2-3. Tries from David and Lauren saw the game finish 2-2 which pushed us into Extra time. The competition was close with near misses from both side and we moved into sudden death! This resulted in each team having to lose a player after a set number of time and would continue until a try was scored. The first player penalyt came in and both teams went down to 6 a-side. We were pushing close to the line with Jordan just coming short by mere milimetres when a pass was thrown and an interception made, the opposition runner just evading Jack's despearate back-tracking chase to score the winning try. Everyone had great fun and enjoyed our day out playing in a tournament, which is unfamiliar territory for a lot of our members. Many thanks to the organisers for holding the event. Our 11 pupil team consisted of David, Lauren (Yr6), Jack, Jordan (Yr5), Ben, Cerys, Charlie, Maya, Sophie, Tawfiq (Yr4) & Dylan (Yr3).

1st June:
We held our Llanharan Primary Olympics today. We woke to see mist and fine drizzle but there was never any doubt that our special day wouldn't go ahead. We were also privileged to be joined by two VIPs this year; 11 times Paralympic Gold medalist David Roberts CBE and London 2012 Olympic Torch bearer Melanie Stephenson. David was kind enough to bring along one of his Paralympic Golds and Melanie brought along the London 2012 Olympic Torch that she carried into Coopers Field in Cardiff to light the cauldron at the Torch Relay celebrations a week ago today.

We began proceedings with all of our pupils marching up onto the field in class order taking part in our parade of flags. The 26 flags represented the family links that our pupils have across the world. We then moved onto our opening ceremony with our 'Flame Dance' to the tune of Chariots of Fire. This flame dance featured Melanie and her Olympic Torch as she 'lit' one of our pupils to instigate the performance.

We then moved onto the competition, which was fierce, competitive and fun! Our events included; sprint, obstacle race, standing jump, discuss, infant marathon, junior marathon and the junior sprint relay. After an afternoon of tense competition the final house standings stood at:

3rd: Ty Gwyrdd
2nd: Ty Coch
1st: Ty Gwyn

The day ended with the presentation of the trophy and each pupil being awarded the special commemorative Llanharan Primary School 2012 Olympics medal. Congratulations to everyone involved, pupils, parents and staff. A selection of photos can be seen on our Twitter Feed HERE @llanharanps

All children have access to the water cooler throughout the day. Also, summer hats are a welcome addition when the sun is hot. Please make sure that these and any clothes are labelled with your child's name.

Our bags for life with Cody from Nursery & Reception's winning logo are still for sale. They are available for £3.00 from Mrs. Henderson.

All children will receive a commemorative medal and stickers will be awarded to those who come 1st, 2nd and 3rd. House colour shirts and PE kits to be worn (Red (Coch), White (Gwyn) & Green, Gwyrdd)).

From today, Foundation Phase and KS2 playgrounds will be changed. In the morning Yr1&2 can walk up the pathway up the drive to the playground outside their classroom and Years 3-6 will use the bottom playground outside their classroom doors (near the log-walk). These changes will allow our Foundation Phase staff to set up age appropriate learning activities in our fantastic outdoor environment. Also, it will minimise the number of times per day our youngest pupils have to use the steps. The morning routine for Nursery&Reception pupils will not change.

11th May:

Year 4/5/6 went to the National Botanic gardens of Wales today to plant their seedlings into our allotment. We feel very fortunate and privileged as a school to once again have an allotment at the Gardens as this year we are one of only two schools in the whole of Wales who has one at the Gardens. We have planted a variety of crops such as sweetcorn, runner beans, beetroot, onions, carrots etc... and will go to pick them at harvest time. If you plan to visit the National Botanic Gardens of Wales during the Summer holidays, please be sure to head to the double-walled garden and visit our plot in the school gardens area.

We were invited to attend to receive an award to recognise our school's work on the coal mining history of Llanharan. Two presentation sessions were held in the Great Hall, we were scheduled for the second session. In the interlude between arriving and attending the ceremony, the pupils and staff were entertained by a Knight, in full armour who gave the pupils the opportunity to try on some of his armour and gave a demonstration on the art of sword fighting. We then entered the Great Hall to watch the ceremony and waited patiently as award after award was handed out. It was then our turn as we were awarded £200 for our project.

26th May:
Due to the large amount of rain that has fallen today and the last few days we have had to take the decision to cancel sports day tomorrow (27th May). This decision was taken due to potential safety risks that arise due to the wet field. Our provisional new date for our sports day is Friday 24th June.
Due to sports day being cancelled, we are now asking for Mr. Roberts class to wear school uniform for tomorrow's 'Love Where You Live' trip to Ynsyngharad Park in Pontypridd. We would like the children to wear rain coats and sensible footwear.

25th May: (Newsletter)
* Thank you very much for your support in collecting both Sainsbury and TESCO vouchers this year. We have collected enough vouchers to purchase two HD Flip Cams, a data recorder, a dark den, recordable speech bubbles and a collection of sport equipments for PE sessions.
* Renovations are continuing at school and this term has seen the development of the Nursery/Reception literacy room. This space has been totally transformed with nursery rhyme and storybook character murals, new bookcases, cupboards, a new table and chairs, puppet theatre and £3,000 of new books are on order!
* Also, new desks and ergonomically designed chairs are in three out of the four classes. Year 3/4 are due to be renovated before the Summer holidays

The transport and entrance costs have been funded by the local authority but a packed lunch will be required. Pupils will return between 1:30-2:00pm, in time hopefuly to complete their sports day events. The children are being asked to wear their sports day clothes (tracksuit bottoms not shorts) in the morning so that they can go straight up to the field as soon as they arrive back in school rather than wasting any time in getting changed.
* Sports Day, weather permitting, will take place on Friday 27th May from 1:30pm onwards. If the field is too wet and poses a health and safety risk we will inform parents by 9:00am on Friday. Keep checking the website and school information for a new date if the event has to be cancelled.
* We are very pleased to announce that we have achieved our first Healthy Schools Green Leaf. We were assessed on the 18th May and we were highly commended for the work initiated at school.

If any parent would like to make a donation please see Mrs. Henderson. Miss Webb will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with her family, especially her sister, Mrs. Hopkins.

11th May:
There has been much excitement this opening fortnight of the Summer Term as we have seen many changes to our school. Firstly Mr. Roberts' class have planted 12 fruit trees (a range of apple, pear, plum and cherry) at the front of the school grounds. Next both Year 4/5/6 and 1/2 took delivery of new tables and chairs for their classroom. After a lot of hard (and at times confusing) work, Mr. Roberts, Mr. Arthur and Mr. Llewelyn put them together and set them out in the classrooms. They look fantastic! Thirdly, the creative wizards from Brighter Ideas have been in to transfer the Nursery & Reception group-work room into an amazing woodlands and fiarytale themed Literacy Room. Finally, Year 4/5/6 have, at last, started to make the plastic bottle greenhouse. Yes! It is coming!!!

15th April:
After yesterday's Easter Bonnet 'Catwalk', we today held our Royal Wedding Street Party and Treasure Hunt. All of our children (and staff) came dressed as princesses, princes, wedding guests and one waiter... We started the afternoon off by splitting the school into small teams comprised of children from all four classes working together. They then had a list of 15 Royal Wedding themes questions with the knowledge that somewhere around the school grounds, Mr. Roberts and Mr. Arthur had hidden cards with the answers on. They then had to match their discovered answer to a question. We then moved onto our street party with a long table being errected outside the fron of the school with plates and plates of party food. Much fun was had, many smiles were on display and it all capped a wonderful way to end the term.

Pupils will receive automated and instant evaluations of their activities. Also, extra homework will be set if we have any school closure days (e.g. cases of snow). Passwords and more information will be sent out in January 2011. 21st September 2010
Year 4/5/6 visited Big Pit in Blaenavon today as part of their studies in their topic 'Coal - Black Gold'. We started off the trip with a visit to old Maggie Morgan in her home who talked us through her life as a door-girl in the mines. Her story of her memories had the whole group enthralled. We then moved to the underground trip. The whole group, adults included, got 'booted and suited' with miner helmets, lamps and battery belts. After just a few minutes of wearing the kit, the children expressed how heavy and uncomfortable they were. Our guide, Andrew 'Bedrock' led us into the cage and down 90 feet underground. We then walked through the mines, with our guide stopping us every time something of interest appeared including the pit pony stables and the big heavy ventilation doors. It was at these doors that we were all asked to turn off our lamps to experience 'pitch dark'. A return to the surface and a visit to see the canaries rounded off an enjoyable trip.

I have moved the news from the previous two years into the archive section as the page was becoming very large!
